Framing Explained: What Happens Before the Frame Goes Up?

By Master Framers Build Team6 min readUpdated 29 June 2026

Framing is the structural backbone of the home. The crew that gets it right is the crew that did the preparation before any timber went up - drawings reviewed, setout checked, sequencing agreed.

In this article

From the street, framing looks like the fast part of a build - timber arrives and a few days later the shape of the house is standing. What you do not see is the planning, setout and coordination that decided whether the frame would go up cleanly or fight the crew the whole way.

What is the framing stage?

Framing is the structural timber skeleton of the home: wall frames, floor systems, roof trusses, bracing and the connections that hold them together. It defines the rooms, the openings, the loads and the lines that every other trade works to.

Why the frame is one of the most important parts of the build

Plumbing, electrical, plastering, cabinetry and finishing all reference the frame. If the frame is out, every trade behind it has to compensate. If the frame is right, the whole rest of the build runs cleaner.

Reviewing drawings, setout and site conditions

Before timber is touched, we go through the structural drawings, the bracing plan, the truss layout and the slab setout. We check that what is on the page matches what is on the ground.

Coordinating with the builder and other trades

We confirm with the builder what is delivered when, where the truss crane is going, when the roofer is booked, and how openings should be set for the chosen windows and doors.

Common framing issues that good preparation avoids

  • Openings that do not match the supplied window or door
  • Bracing missed or installed in the wrong location
  • Setout drift that compounds across the build
  • Sequencing clashes with the truss or roof crew

Why an organised framing crew matters

Prepared crews work cleanly through the stages. Unprepared crews leak time and quality. The difference shows up in handover.

How quality framing supports the rest of the build

When the frame is square, plumb and to the drawings, the trades that follow can do their jobs properly. That is the real measure of a good frame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the framing stage of a build?

Framing is the structural timber skeleton of the home - wall frames, roof trusses, floor systems - that every other trade hangs off.

How long does framing take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the home, but a typical single-storey new build frame can take a week or two for a prepared crew.

Why is framing quality so important?

Every later trade and finish depends on the frame being square, plumb and to the drawings. Rough framing causes rough finishes.

Do you frame both new builds and renovations?

Yes. We frame new homes for volume and private builders, and we handle structural framing work inside renovations.
